Sudha Treasures Benefit Sale opens November 9th in the Town Center

As evening settled over the Corte Madera Town Center, the Ninth Annual “Sudha Sale” got off to a fine start on Friday, November 9 with crowds of expectant shoppers entering a world of Sudha Pennathur’s imagination.   The old Ann Taylor store had been re-imagined as a colorful, jewel-toned gallery selling artisanal goods from India and the Far East, all designed by Sudha and crafted by her team of hundreds of artisans.   Playful kantha scarves held their own; finely-woven pashminas and gem-encrusted necklaces contrasted with costume pieces; colorful skirts and jackets anchored one side of the room while whimsical bags, holiday ornaments, and decorative items highlighted the other.   A buffet of pizza, ceviche, brownies and drinks kept energy high as shoppers took in the scene.

The highlight of all, of course,  was the fact that all profits from the sale of these goods would benefit Bread and Roses and Angel Island Conservancy, two local non-profits supported wholeheartedly by Sudha for many years.   With the room full and buzzing, Doug McConnell  introduced Sudha in a short talk that underscored her great commitment to her community over the years and the grace with which she manages it all.    Sudha followed, to speak of her long appreciation for Bread and Roses and the remarkable work it does all year and and for the historic and natural significance of Angel Island  She also thanked the dedicated volunteers and staff from both organizations who had helped set up the sale and are critical, day in and day out, to the continued success of these groups.

November

November was a month filled with store presence. I did two personal appearances- one at

Bergdorf Goodman followed by Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. Usha Kris was on hand to photograph the events. It was wonderful to hear comments about the line. A lot of signing of special pieces that customers bought at both the stores. Neiman Marcus on Union Square in San Francisco looked spectacular with its radiant colors in their trees where I had done the skirts and ornaments.

December 2nd saw the opening of the annual “Sudha’s Treasures” a store space donated by the Town Center in Corte Madera. Thestore was a benefit for The Redwoods, a community of seniors. We raised more money over one weekend than we had done over 2 last year! A record contribution!

The holiday tradition continues…

As we approach this holiday season, we are gearing up for the 6th Annual Sudha Sale, to benefit Bread & Roses and The Redwoods on November 6-8 and again November 14-15 at The Corte Madera Town Center. Come join us for a special preview party Friday, November 6th from 5.30 pm to 8pm. Please mark your calendars for some early holiday shopping for friends and family.

What makes this year’s sale unique is that due to the challenging economic times I have made a concerted effort to bring extraordinary value in each product offering. Samples of collections carried in high end stores and museum shops are priced at wholesale or below! Many are from the private collection of The House of Pennathur and are on view for sale for the first time. Since most are one of a kind, come early to get the choice picks.

So many people are working to make this event possible. Gary Morgret will use his special visual talent to make the store beautiful for you. Some of you may remember that he volunteered to do the same thing, at The Embarcadero when I opened a similar benefit store for the Asian Art Museum in the early nineties. He has also now donated some fixtures and a cash register for the event! Barr Hibbs is working untiringly to move all these things to our store. Peter Merts, the acclaimed photographer will be on hand to photograph the evening.

Prices range from a few dollars to several hundred dollars for the one of a kind beautiful jewelry from Designs by Sudha. Silk and wool scarves are hand woven using indigenous hand looms with exquisite yarns. Jewelry once carried in the best museums and catalogs are for sale at a fraction of the price.

The best part of the sale is the personalized attention you will receive from the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers of these two fabulous organizations. When else can one hope to be waited on by such an illustrious group?
